The temperature has dropped and our first snow has arrived here in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In my hometown (and Converge headquarters), that means we’re officially welcoming the holiday season. If I didn’t know it by the Christmas music and influx of foot traffic at our local Target, I would absolutely know it by the snow and the sentiment this season always brings. With the first snowfall every year, I am reminded of the beauty of my alma mater, The University of Iowa, and all of the memories I have made there over the years—as a student, alumni and Corridor community member.
Whether you are watching the first snowfall on your campus or the sun is shining and the holiday decorations are your only sign, I hope you are feeling inspired with ways to connect with your students and community during this wonderful time of year. There’s no time like the present to channel that inspiration (especially before winter break sets in) and share a meaningful piece of your brand and your story with the people that are helping to shape your legacy.
A few holiday seasons ago, we shared a blog post with five examples of holiday cards from campuses across the country. In honor of that tradition, here are five festive #highered videos to inspire you and your team this holiday season.
Brescia University College is Canada’s-only women’s university. They embrace their #BresciaBold community in all aspects of their content—from social media and video to their website and events. Brescia’s holiday video showcases different campus hotspots and shares perspectives from students, faculty and alumni on their wishes for the new year.
They may not have snow on the ground, but The U didn’t let that stop them from embracing the warmth of the season. We love the simplicity of the University of Miami’s video, the cheerfulness of the music and the symbolism created with the lighting of different buildings, scenery and recognizable artifacts across campus. A simple, but meaningful way to spread holiday cheer from Miami.
Kenyon College followed student Oliver VandenBurg door-to-door as he plays carols for campus leadership, students and faculty across campus. Kenyon is a small private liberal arts college in a close-knit Ohio community. It is inspiring to see the impact one student can have on their community as a whole. The snow is falling and the message (that one person can make all the difference) resonates throughout the video.
From the song choice to the perfect sense of happiness, hugs and community that shines throughout the montage of footage, Butler University’s seasonal video really gives you that warm fuzzy feeling that all good holiday content should. The meaning in the message comes through in visuals and sounds without any marketing language. It is impactful and authentic.
CSU Long Beach embraces the sunshine and yellow hues of their beautiful campus. They give students a chance to share what they are grateful for by activating their voices to create a piece of community art on campus that celebrates the season. Get inspired and get your students involved in the sense of community that comes with the holidays.
